FWIW, I've always said "Al - FEEN - ay", pronouncing all the vowels: reckoned it could've been elfin, ao fim, en fim, enfin (="at last") or simply an idiosyncratic spelling of any of the above, or a Marketing-Dep't notion that whatever it was, it sounded Foreign-Exotic, Hence Desirable, a bit like "Spyder". Probably someone from the service dep't said to the gaffer, after working on the prototype, "Wot's this thing all about, Alfie?" and the Marketing Guy, overhearing this, said -- well, you know the rest.
