Nomad?
« on: September 05, 2005, 09:52:09 am »
My wife and I are looking to replace our Treks hybrids. We do long (1000k) tours. The Nomad looks good but we wonder about 26 inch compared to 700, which we are used to.

Best upright bike (As opposed to recumbents) I ever had is the Thorn Nomad.
I weigh in at 18stones and took a full camping kit out with me, no problems.
Build quality was excellent and I wish I hadn't let it go! I will have another one sometime.

hi kwn,

i have a trek 520 with 700c wheels and a nomad with 26" wheels ...

there are really pros and cons for both depending on your riding style ...

i use my trek a lot for commuting, the 700c wheels feel faster, even with heavier touring tyres ...

the nomad feels more stable and secure, especially when loaded, and definitely over gravel roads and i can still manage a good turn of speed when commuting on it too ...

the nomad is good, very very good ... if you decide to get one, you won't regret it ... i really like my one ...

Well, I'm not 18 stone and my camping gear is very light, but occasionally I put a fair bit of power into a bicycle.  The robust nature of the xTc surprised me.  Thorn's advertisements don't really convey the solidity of this machine - mainly because they really want their bicycles to last you a life time.

If you are going to be doing large mileages on very poor surfaces in remote places with heavy gear, you need a proper expedition bike, but the xTc is undoubtedly rough stuff capable and likely to perform better than a heavier machine if, like me, the off-road stuff is less than 10% of your tour.

My day rides from home avoid main roads and that means hilly lanes with lumpy surfaces.  The xTc is outstanding for such riding.

26" Vs 700c?
I've been riding both for about a year, I can't say I find wheel size makes a difference either way.
Another viewpoint, a bit more scientific than mine

Hello, I have in the past owned an original horizontal top tube Nomad. It was brilliant! I sold it due to long illness. Regretted it and now have a sloping top tube Nomad. Cant be bad can it? I will recommend any THORN bike. The sales pitch by Robin is a good view of what you buy. Robin knows how to sell his bikes-BUT- the bikes are as good if not better than his recommendation!!
Best regards,
John.
