Bikes for Kids - Islabikes
« on: October 09, 2010, 07:51:33 PM »
Both our kids have Islabikes - Beinn 20 and Beinn 24 respectively. We have found them to be great for building their confidence. The older lad is now ready to move onto a bigger bike. I wondered how tough the Luath 26's might be? I know it is described as suitable for Cyclocross. About 70% of his cycling is on road, and the remainder will be on forest tracks. Anyone out there with any experience they can share?

Just back from a week on Deeside with our Islabikes including a Luath 26, hence the late reply. The Luath is absolutely fine for the mix of road and forest tracks you describe, though depending on the size of the rider, you might want wider tyres such as Marathon 1.5".

That said, my eldest has just moved from the Luath 26 to a Luath 700 with 28mm cyclo-cross tyres and finds it very comfortable.

Hope this helps, but feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks for this - just what I was after. Looks like it will be the Luath then with the Marathon tyres. I'll report how he finds it. I'm releived he's not that taken by mountain biking  - we would have struggled to stretch to the Creig.

Must say I have found Islabikes aftersales service excellent, and the light weight of the bikes has been a real advantage.
