thorn XTC RIP?
« on: August 05, 2009, 08:11:17 AM »
Have long been planning, when finances allow, to buy an XTC, only to find that Thorn no longer make it!! Does anyone know whether this is a temporary absence or has this all-rounder been eclipsed/replaced by the newer Raven models?

Thanks

Andy

Hello,
I think that Thorn are going the way of Rohloff by just supplying those type of bikes other than Sherpa, Club Tour and Mk 3 Audax. In my own opinion not the best way to go, but its obviously working for Thorn. It is possible to get XTC etc previously used on the open market and also I think that Thorn would build a frame for you but at a greater expense.
Its the way things go.
I hope you find one somewhere as its a real shame longing and then not finding!

In fact the St John Street Cycles website lists Thorn XTC frameset in stock in four sizes, so maybe one of them is your size?

If you have a look at the Sherpa brochure, the last page talks about the eXp 26 custom built frame upgrade, and says it can be built "in the style of our xTc frames".

However at 1100 pounds for the upgrade, (probably >2500 for the whole bike) you would have to be very sure that you needed the 26in wheels on an Audax style bike with derailleurs.

If you offer enough money, and are prepared to wait, I'm sure Thorn will built you exactly what you want.  :)
