REPLACING THE BB MY THORN RAVEN CITY SLICKER
« on: August 09, 2008, 04:58:11 PM »
I'm thinking about replacing by chainset on my Thorn Raven City Slicker with Rohloff as I'm getting a squeak in the left arm of the chainset that seems impossible to get rid of with tightening. I was thinking of using something like the Truvativ Omnium chainset but that uses external bearings - so my question is would it be possible to fit to the Thorn frame or do I have to stick to a standard BB that doesn't have external bearings?

You can use external bottom bracket bearings but you need a http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Thorn-Eccentric-Bottom-Bracket-Insert--fits-Raven-Mk2-Sport-Tour-etc-73.2mm-for-external-bearing-b-b-gold-16620.htm I'd take all your old stuff off (cranks off, bottom bracket out, eccentric shell out) clean all the tapers etc really well and reasemble everything with Shimano Anti-Seize to the correct torque settings and your creak should go.

Thanks Danger Mouse - that makes sense. I took the chainset apart, removed the EBB and regreased everything. That seems to have cured the creak on my ride yesterday.
