I'm sorry to report that Sheldon Brown died last night (Feb 3, 2008) from a massive heart attack.
As many on this board will know, he has long been considered the expert on many cycling topics. See

I was fortunate to have had a chance meeting with him north of Boston last year, and he was equally engaging, entertaining, generous, and learned as I'd expected him to be.
A great loss for Boston and the cycling community worldwide.
