What a great find and read. Thank you for posting. It just goes to show what a wonderful bike the Mk1 Nomad is and how fortunate someone might be if they were able to find one that was for sale, perhaps even on this very forum ;)

I thought that the Mk I was the dark green Nomad with Rohloff and the derailleur Nomad did not have a mark designation?

I have been wondering if there was a good way to put a Salsa Anything cage (or the similar Blackburn cage) on the front fork.  Looks like he mounted a regular cage in a rather simple but ingenious way.

I'll defer to the better informed. I refer to this archive as my source:

Perhaps mine is simply a 'Nomad' and has no prefix or suffix to speak of; a mere plebian in that regard!

Yes, there are three versions of the Nomad, 1. Thorn Nomad (derailleur) 2. Thorn Raven Nomad Mk1 (Rohloff) 3. Thorn Raven Nomad Mk2 (Rohloff).
The Thorn Raven Nomad Mk2 has extra fillets added to strengthen it for use with a suspension front fork.

Just found this post ... very nicely written blog.  Sell the Nomad?  Say it isn't so. Think of further adventures and the genesis for more well crafted words. Those are some nice photos as well.

Leave the dust on it, I really like how you've caught the essence of that idea, and layer it at your nearest opportunity, with more of tomorrow's memories.

Nice photos and words, Mike, and I especially liked your use of the Siltarp. Such a useful device.  I tend to use mine together with my tent when I'm summer camping, on account of the bugs. September onwards, the bugs aren't such a problem.

Why would you sell the Nomad? Just curious, I'm not looking to buy one.

I did sell it.. here's the thing, I've moved more and more to off-road touring for which my Surly ECR is better suited, so rater than have it hang around, much as I was attached to it... it's gone to chap planning a big adventure of his own who will really appreciate it so better it's out there being used than sitting around.. he loves the bike so that's great.

Thanks, Mike.  Good that it's gone to a good home, and will be well used & looked after.

Oh, I see. I'm glad that you are still riding. I'd be interested in photos of how your bike is set up, esp with respect to the luggage and water carry setup choices. Or is that in another thread that I've missed?

There's quite a good pic of my ECR in this post - water bottles on forks and under downtube, everything else distributed front and rear. was using a tarp rather than tent for that trip: http://www.seasurfdirt.com/2015/05/24/lightweight-bike-touring-gear-list/

Bit heavier loaded but needed serious cold weather gear, a tent, and more food carrying capacity, this post has a a pic using small ortlieb 'front' panniers on the back for extra carrying capacity: http://www.seasurfdirt.com/2015/10/01/spiti-and-onwards/

Absolutely stunning Mike. Cracking  photography .,what a wonderful trip that must have been. I must admit I would have taken the 40km rather than the "cablecar".Thanks for sharing.
