Differences in Rohloff models
« on: March 06, 2007, 05:00:55 AM »
This hub is so darn expensive that I want it to be versatile enough to use on other bikes as I upgrade. Right now, I have no disc brake equipted bike but I may. Also depending on how much I like it, I may have a custom frame built with OEM dropouts. Is it possible to get the disc model but also buy attachments such as the torque arm or OEM axle and use the hub interchangeably on multiple bikes?

Hello,
Yes is the answer. You can buy with the disc mount, without, on its own, in a wheel, with or without the chain tensioner.
Placed that order yet?

In short yes.  It is also possible to buy the parts to convert a non disc hub to a disc hub at a later date, though it is more costly than going for a disc model in the first place.

The only downside with the disc hub is that you have to have the external cable box mechanism which some people reckon imparts an inferior less precise 'feel' to the gear changes.  With this in mind you may be better going for the cheaper standard hub and converting it to disc/external mechanism at a later date if needed.

Yes you can, but I wouldn't do it on my own... specially if you want to change to external gear mech.

I own both a Raven Tour and a Catalyst. In this case I don't need to change anything from the hub... just swap the tires and away I go! But often I've thought about changing the axel plate in order to use it in a nice frame, disc ready, that's collecting dust in the garage cause it has convencional gears... but of course this is an easy thing to do.

Anyway, Rohloff hub is really well thought and you can change almost everything.
