Recommendations for Disc Rims for Rohloff hub
« on: May 06, 2015, 12:01:00 PM »
I am looking for recommendations for strong rims for rohloff disc hub.  I intend using it for rough gravel and greenways as well as light touring.
Should I go 32 or 36 hole?

Many thanks in advance.

32 or 36 hole rim? it really depends on the number of holes on your Rohloff hub, 32 hole hubs are the norm though they do make them in 36.

I haven't bought yet I am trying to decide which hub to buy based on the suitable rims.  I want to lace in the best rim for my needs and that can run 35 to 42mm tyres.

you don't need a disc specific rim, there's a much wider choice if you opt for a standard rim.

just curious, is the 'disc' verison of that rim any different to the non-disc version?

Machined sidewall for rim brakes, non-machined (dark anodized) for discs.

Best,

Dan.

There will be internal difference that you can't see.
A rim brake rim has to be able to resist both the inward pressure of braking forces, the wear caused by braking and the outward pressure of the inflated tyre. A disc rim only has to resist the latter.
Because the disc specific rim doesn't have to have the vertical braking surface it is sometimes shallower in depth and are sometimes considerably lighter because of this. The confusing factor in lots of disc rims (especially 26" size) is the manufacturers have added strength for mountain bikers back in.

yeah, possibly.   it's possible the website just lists the wrong/duplicate info.  the tech-spec and photo of both rims is exactly the same.   I was looking for a disc specific rim a while ago, but gave up because the choice was so limited.

EDIT: the photo does show machined and non-machined surfaces, that's the only difference.
