Nomad Build
« on: January 13, 2007, 03:47:22 am »
I just ordered a Nomad and recently had been looking at the flat bar vs drops thread on the Raven. I came across an option while on the internet that I don't think had ever been discussed.  It's called a Jones Bar.  Information is available here: http://www.jonesbikes.com/update/hbar/fs_setup.html

The site claims that Shimano XTR STI shifters work best.  Does anyone have any experience with a MTN Bike shifter setup on a Nomad[?]

Hi Rangin,

Which Nomad are we talking about The original 'Nomad' with derailing gears - now on sale with £200 off or the new 'Raven Nomad' with Rohloff hub?

The original with derailing gears.  I was hoping to get a very versatile bike at a good price.  I think that before summer however, I would also want a RST.  My wife could be an obstacle, so I would possibly need a seperate bank account and an Alias..pretty standard stuff!

I don't have any experience with this bar, but I have looked at the website several times and marveled at the price! It is a very nice bar, but a bit wide for my taste.

A year or so ago I had an exchange of emails with Dave Yates regarding a custom 'H' bar (a more perpendicular version of the Jones bar, similar to the Bike Friday design but without the split).

I reckon this setup would give a variety of positions:

a) Front extension
b) Rear extension
c) Middle with thumb booked over the "flats"
d) Outside of the flats
d) Inside of the flats

It would also leave lots of room on the flats for bells, lights, bar bag etc.

I didn't take it any further, but I still reckon it would provide a very comfortable and practical bar.

Not with a Nomad, but it's all designed to work with MTB shifters so there'll be no problem.  I know three people with Nomads and two of them use flat bars.

Are you referring to this Bike Friday Design?  I kind of like the bar end set up as well.  You are so right about the price!  Actually Grimian's set up on his Mercury looks fantastic to me.  Those Cane Creek bar ends make it sort of look like an H bar.

I like the look of that bar, very useful.

I had a Nomad that I was going to convert to Shimano XT MTB shifters after a tour. However, the baggage handlers bent the rear mech hanger which made me think twice - had I not used bar end shifters my tour would have been ruined. [V]

With flat/ergo bars, the Nomad would give one of the most comfortable rides around, I'm sure of that.

I think I agree with you.  I had been looking at a Nitto Noodle Bar and a Pearl stem with a SHimano Dura Ace bar end shifter set up.  I was thinking that the simplicity of barcons would be best on a long tour.  The only thing is, ( and I don't know if others would agree) I personally feel that most Thorn machines clearly look better and probably function just as well with flat or comfort bars.

What holds me back is the grip shifters.  They may be perfect for a Rohloff equipped frame, but not the best choice for one that has derailleurs.[^]

You can get Bar Cons converted to use with straight bars.

I have the same thing from another manufacturer, Pauls Components, from before SJS made them.  They are IMO the best flat bar derailleur shifters by far.

Hey I really like that! It's within easy reach and it looks fairly natural.  Is that your set up now?  I wonder if this is not too involved for my LBS to set it up that way with an H-Bar[?]

Yes, Bar Cons look like the best option for straight bar / derailleur setup - especially if you have to fly.

Wasn't there a New Zealand chap who posted on this forum years back who uses this setup? I think his name was Hoogie? He'll be able to tell you if they are any good.

Just did a search and found his website: http://www.hoogie.co.nz/bikes/nomad.htm - looks like it'll answer some of your questions.
