I bought myself this bike in 2007 with a plan to get used to it and then ride it more extensively when I retired in 2009. As with many best laid plans, this has not materialised and the bike is in my garage having done less than 200 miles. I will try to take and post some pics of it tomorrow but its general spec is:

Someone -- perhaps two someones, buyer *and* seller -- is going to be very happy very soon. Sounds like one of those "find a rare nearly unused collector's car in a barn" stories, but with a current-model desirable bicycle n this case. Looking forward to the conclusion of this one.

I think it seems a bit confusing because Picture Three is tilted to the left a bit, making it seem unfamiliar. Bill's RT has the standard Rohloff routing from above, using the cable stop mounted to the left-rear canti boss with detachable q/r cables feeding into the hub from above, so no, no EX box.

(Bill, an "EX Box" refers to an alternative routing for the Rohloff shifter cables and an "External" means to shift the hub. On Thorns, this means they come in from beneath the left chainstay and enter a small, black box that attaches to the left side of the hub. This controls internal shift mechanism of the hub. Yours comes in from above, and uses two cables, each with a means for quickly releasing them to allow dropping the wheel for service/flat repair, etc).

Matt,

Though both systems have their adherents and detractors, I think it is really a matter of preference and appropriateness for a given application. On some bikes the come-from-above approach results in less cable friction. For others, the lower run is the key to good operation. In practical use, there isn't much difference. In the setup like Bill's bike uses, you just undo the two cable q/rs and then re-do them after the wheel is back in the bike. On the EX box, you just undo and redo a thumbscrew for the same effect. It is largely a horses-for-courses thing and both are "current" in the Rohloff product line.

I have owned Rohloffs with and without the EX box. Given the choice I would go for the EX box as I think it is a neater, cleaner approach but to be honest I have found it no quicker or reliable removing the rear wheel with or without the EX box. The qr on the non ex box version work very well and I have never had any issue with the gears matching up perfectly every time.
