Rohloff spares for first TRT tour?
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:12:58 AM »
Hi all ... My wife and I are about to take our new TRTs on their first extended tour. We will be completing the lower half or The Mawson Trail in South Australia. About 500km of rough dirt tracks and backroads. We will be fully self sufficient, carrying all our camping gear, and on occasion, several days of food and water supplies. The bikes will only have approx. 1000km on the odometers when we set off. I'm not planning on doing the first oil change before we leave unless someone can convince me otherwise. We will be carrying tools and spares to deal with the unlikely event of chain problems. I'm thinking that carrying spare hub cables and fittings would be overkill. What do you folks think? And if I was to carry this stuff what sort of stuff? What sort of cable/bayonet preparation should be done before departure. Are there any other Rohloff related spares and tools that I may have overlooked (I will be carrying the BB adjusting spanner, 15mm socket and a Torx 20 bit).
Thanks

Sounds a great tour.  You shouldn't need anything special for the TRT on a trip like that -it is after all designed for that kind of trip.  I bought an internal cable change kit from thorn which I carry all the time along with an external cable and suitable size allen keys/torx tools as they take little space.  However, I've never needed them on the road and it is probably overkill.  I do carry the EBB adjusting spanner which also fits the pedals and allows easy chain removal if needed.  Enjoy the trip.

Should be a really great tour. I did the full* Mawson Trail with a mate in 2010 and we really enjoyed the quet roads and back routes. It's probably wise to get the maps from BikeSA. We just used commercial maps of SA that also showed the trail route quite well, but we had limited ideas about where to camp or anything about the detailed history/geography of the country we passed through.

We took a comprehensive spares and tool kit, but used very little of it - no punctures or major mechanicals on the trail, although mud-clogged mudguards meant I had to remove them and mess about with my light wiring at one stage, then refit a few days later. For the Thorn I'd take my standard tools and spares, probably make sure I have spare gear cables and the BB tool.

What my standard tool kit includes (all packed in a 5"x4"x2" pack and some in my seatbag):

Tools
   6" shifting spanner
   pliers
   2 tyre levers
   Topeak Alien multi-tool
   8mm spanner
   chain tool
   8mm allen key
   spoke key
   Rohloff sprocket remover
   screw driver (dual head)
   cleaning brush (tootbrush)
   puncture repair kit
   tyre boot

Spares
   gear & brake cables
   spokes (inside handlebar)
   brake pads
   adhesive tape
   zip ties (asstd. sizes)
   baling wire
   hose clamp
   steel rod (5 x 110mm)
   assorted nuts & bolts
   2 tubes
   grease tub
   chain lube

* we began at Adelaide and finished at Blinman, but actually rode about 70% of the Mawson. Gaps missed were due to - the steep climb up the Mt Lofty's, a few missed turns, too many headwinds and a desire to 'take' the tailwind on the tarmac and cover kilometres, and a couple of sections of wet, 'orrible muddy trails.

If it rains out there never ride on red clay roads  :(

Thanks for responding people.     geocycle: ... So if I was to get one of these www.sjscycles.co.uk/rohloff-shifter-cable-set-18m-2-x-11-mm-inners-and-housing-8268-prod16488/ and a pair of these www.sjscycles.co.uk/rohloff-bayonet-connectors-2-female-type-8273-prod16458/ and one of these www.sjscycles.co.uk/rohloff-hub-cable-easy-set-8573-prod16460/ I would pretty much have all bases covered right? ... Are there any special tools required to fit the cables into the twist grip gear changer? (apart from the Torx 20 to remove it from the handle bar) ... Are the bayonet fittings straight forward enough to change? Just an allen key required? Would it be a good idea to pre cut the cables to exactly the correct length? (as suggested by Thorn).
I know I could answer these questions by referring to the Rohloff manual but I'm interested in any "real world" experiences people might have had.

Hi ilpadrone: ... Nice to see you popping up here ... you've helped me before on the Aussie Bike Forums (I use the same avatar there) ... Yes we have all of the official maps. We did the section between Blinman and Quorn last year (including the ride from Orroroo to Blinman to begin the trip, and through Pichi Richi Pass from Quorn to Port Augusta where we finished riding and caught the bus back to Adelaide) ... Your Red Centre journal at CGOAB was/has been considerable inspiration  for our ongoing obsession with The Mawson Trail.
I hear what you are saying about carrying spare gear cables. Heading out there without them probably isn't  sensible, no matter how new the bikes are ... Murphy's Law and all  ;)
We remove mudguards (our touring bikes double as city bikes) when we go bush ... ever since some muddy episodes on Kangaroo Island.

Hi slim ... Yes I've seen Andy's tools/spares lists ... thanks for including them here ... I've spent a lot of late nights going over that particular PDF  :)

Thanks again guys
Greg

This video answers my gear cable replacement tools question: www.thorncycles.co.uk/rohloffshiftercable.html ... Although it relates to the old shifter ... This relates to the new shifter: www.rohloff.de/uploads/media/8206_Twistshifter_en.pdf

Greg,

With reference to this thread: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=3999.0
How 'bout tucking in a spare Rohloff drain/fill cap or two? Unnoticeably small in a tool kit till needed.

Thanks to obeying the First Law of Preparation, hauling spares means you'll likely never need them. Far better than the opposite, leaving them home and needing them desperately!  ;) What a fabulous trip you have planned; all best luck and enjoy. I know you will both have a wonderful time. Please take us along afterwards by sharing a few pics of your fun on -- and off! --  the road.

Best,

Dan.

Thanks Dan ... I ordered the spares from SJS yesterday evening ... I will be putting together a CGOAB journal of the trip and will be sure to link to it from here. For anyone interested in The Mawson Trail/Flinders Ranges this is my account of our trip through the Northern section last year: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/mawson11 ... It gives a good indication of the type of country we will be pushing our shiny new TRTs through in 3 weeks time ...
