After removing rear wheel I cannot change all my speeds
« on: March 30, 2014, 04:28:36 pm »
Hello,

I just removed the rear wheel in my Thorn Nomad (without putting it in 14 speed, it might be 6) and after putting the wheel back I cannot go down to 1 or 2 and change seems to go harder.

What can I do?

Hi CT!

If you have the external click-box, just remove it and set the shifter to Gear 14. Then use an 8mm box-end wrench to turn the mechanism counter-clockwise all the way. Reattach the click-box and all should be re-indexed.

Best,

Dan.

Thanks. Yes, that should work, I just need to find the right tool now.

CT, if you have the eccentric-adjusting pin wrench supplied by Thorn, there should be an 8mm box wrench punched out of the other end. That will do the job nicely for you.  :)

Best,

Dan.

Unfortunately I left it at my parents for the 2 months ride around Spain, so I will try to get one on the way before asking them to deliver it.

How about:

1. connect the external shifter box to the hub
2. shift the shifter in one direction as far as you can
3. disconnect the external shifter
4. can the shifter now go further?

5A. if yes, then the hub was stopping the movement. So the hub is all the way shifted.
6A. move the shifter to the limit in that direction.
7A. reconnect the ext box

5B. if no, then the shifter hit the limit. so move the shifter the other way quite a bit
6B. reconnect the shifter
7B. move the shifter again to the limit in the first direction as far as it will go
8B. go to step 3

The idea here is that the shifter + ext box works just like an 8MM wrench! You have all the tools you need!

Problem solved, great trick!
