How about:
1. connect the external shifter box to the hub
2. shift the shifter in one direction as far as you can
3. disconnect the external shifter
4. can the shifter now go further?
5A. if yes, then the hub was stopping the movement. So the hub is all the way shifted.
6A. move the shifter to the limit in that direction.
7A. reconnect the ext box
5B. if no, then the shifter hit the limit. so move the shifter the other way quite a bit
6B. reconnect the shifter
7B. move the shifter again to the limit in the first direction as far as it will go
8B. go to step 3
The idea here is that the shifter + ext box works just like an 8MM wrench! You have all the tools you need!
