Grating Noise/Feel after removing rear wheel..help
« on: November 20, 2009, 04:48:22 PM »
Just removed my rear wheel to change a tyre and now there is a real 'grating'feel through the pedals when took for a short test ride
I've removed the wheel numerous times before following the handbook and simply unhooked the two rohloff cables etc and refitted with no problems.I've not looked to see what gear I've been in when disconnecting as the handbook says it doen't matter [from memory]
I've seen various posts about not having the quick release too tight when refitting so I've played around with this and makes no difference.
I can use all the gears but they all grate.
Rohloff has done about 5000 miles with no issues and yearly oil changes.
I've got to cycle home 9 miles ish tonight so fingers crossed.
Help please

A big thankyou to Robin Thorn.
Speaking to him, when I said I had a 48/16 set up he said it sounded like a chain wear problem...so I've just removed the wheel again, rotated the rear sprocket around a bit [random guess how much as I was expecting to have to do this numerous times] and hey presto no grating...marvellous.

Interesting.  I am glad it is all fixed.

It reminds me of this article by Sheldon Brown.

Glad its sorted Hux.

I had a similar experience after my chain came off after a lump in the road escaped my eyes - it was a tad on the slack side.

I have since reprofiled some of the teeth on the sprocket (nothing skilled - and the wheel stayed on the bike) to remove wear related hooks.  Its absolutely silent again now.
