Thorn Commutour
« on: October 27, 2009, 05:16:26 PM »
Can anyone tell me where the Thorn Commutour fitted in the Thorn product range, and if Thorn's original brochure for it is available anywhere on the web?

I picked one up second hand but I can find little information about it on the web. It seems to have disappeared from the Thorn web site in 2004. From the name I wonder if was intended for commuting and light touring.
For those that don't know it, the model I have has 26" wheels, a welded Reynolds 525 butted tube frame, horizontal dropout and derailleur hanger, threadless headset, canti bosses, elegantly curved fork and eyelets for a rear rack but not a front one.

Hi Jon,

The Commutour was a cheaper version of the XTC SWB albeit with long horizontal rear dropouts so that it could be built up as either a singlespeed / hub gear / or traditional derailleur geared bike. I had one & run it as a fixie - it was a lovely  comfortable sporty ride.
I'm sure it could be a popular machine again IF Thorn re-launched it offered it with an Alfine hub or Sturmey 3 speed fixed option...

Thanks for your response brummie.

I have now seen a Thorn brochure where it is described as “Lightweight, nimble, responsive, fast …..idea for Commuting, winter training, light touring or club use”. The description also says “Tight, compact frame, fillet brazed in the UK during the off peak season by our master craftsmen”, which gives the impression it was not seen as a mainstream product even when still being produced.
