Anyone got any links or info on the Ventura
have looked pretty much everywhere but apart from a couple of very brief mentions I can't find out much about it

I need to order tyres but not sure what size it will take i know 700c but unsure of max width it can take with mudguards
I'm guessing 28mm's should work but i don't have any 700c bikes that i can compare measurements/clearance

i bought it mainly because of the lugs tbh, thought it would be good to learn masking and picking out the cutouts in the lugs, it's also my size so will end up being used,  thought I'd build it as is and if i like it then I'll at some stage respray it

I have no clue on tire size, sorry.

That frame looks good enough to me that if I owned it I would just try to touch up all the small nicks in the paint.  The decals on the top tube likely can't be fixed, I would initially just leave them on the bike and after a while decide if I would rather remove them or not.

For most of my bikes, I have just tried to find matching fingernail polish that matches the paint, the built in small brush makes it quite convenient to use.

Hi Bill, Did you manage to find anything out regarding the Thorn Ventura. I also have one i still use for touring (Still going strong), but i also want to fit bigger tyres but again unsure what size it will take with mudguards.

Bill,
To 'lugline' you do not require any masking. You can purchase a 'pen' type thing which has paint in it. It is then very easy to 'simply' draw around the lugs.
I have not done this but I have seen someone do it.
Where to get the 'pen', I have no idea. But you can be certain that if you search long enough and use the correct wording, something will turn up!

I use a Kemper FluidWriter with a small tip and one-shot paint. Works a treat for fine outlining of lugs without blobs or skips. The small tip gives a resulting line width roughly equal to the lug thickness, nice and tight. If you want thicker, then you can get a FluidWriter with a larger tip. Available at art-supply stores.

Cheap, quick, effective. I'll be using one again when I repaint my Fixie. It has window-cutout reinforcements on the brake and stay bridges and long-tang reinforcements inside each fork blade as well as the lugs to outline.

For linear stripes along fender/mudguard edges, I use roller pinstriping tools. Beugler makes a nice one for a high price ( https://www.beugler.com/ )or you can use one of the knockoffs if you are careful with paint consistency:

This worked nicely to restore the original red pinstripes in my late father's black 1938 Hercules coaster-brake "gentleman's roadster".

The pinstripes on one of my custom Japanese randonneurs were hand-painted using long horsehair brushes with bamboo handles by one of a cadre of elderly women, the only workers trusted to do the job in the small family workshop where the bike was made. They are exquisitely even and parallel, long-drawn in one long motion by a very steady hand. I couldn't hope to match the results by that method, photo below. Please excuse the dust, as I had just returned from a 400km day ride when I took the photo.

So...back to the tyres, with 35mm guards 700-28 max, I'm pretty sure with 45mm guards you'd get 700-32 tyres on, pretty much the same as our mk1 Club Tour.
