It must have been galling paying for two rooms in two different hotels, but that sort of thing happens!!  A very good average speed as well.

In answer to the last couple of questions:

I was riding on 1.6 Marathon Supremes. These were fantastic, I couldn't help feeling though that I was using them outside of their "design window". They are road tyres and I ended up doing a lot of gravel track and (very rocky) off road sections a fair way away from any assistance. What I tried to describe were my concerns as I rode along. In summary I wouldn't change the tyres but I might well be more careful in my route planning!

I used a Gramin 800 loaded with the excellent maps from Velomap and the routes planned via RidewithGPS
