Thorn Forum Undergoing Maintenance/Mail Upgrade
« on: June 04, 2015, 05:18:14 AM »
Hi All!

While the Forum is undergoing an upgrade to the mail system, some features may be temporarily unavailable, including attached photos -- they won't upload and previously uploaded ones aren't viewable.

The problem will be resolved as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Best,

Dan.

Yes! That's it!  ;D

No, but I have an update. We're "in process" toward a solution.

After exhaustive investigation at the Forum end, I found the mail problem (both for new-member registration and for topic updates) was at the server -- our old mail protocol was no longer supported by the host. Installing the new version required the host transfer the Forum offline and that broke the default theme. This sometimes happens when one component is updated. Currently, we have no links to attached photos and avatars as well as photo uploads, so we're text-only for now, and the mail links aren't connected either. There's no corruption and everything is still there, waiting to be re-linked.

Unfortunately, I'm on extremely limited comms in the mountains. I can still monitor, moderate, and administer the Forum and screen new applicants if I'm patient. However, my connection to the server times-out before changes can be made and I don't want to corrupt the database if things disconnect halfway through. Thorn's dedicated IT person is away at present, so we'll need to await his return to upload and invoke the needed repair tool while I'm dealing with extremely slow connection speeds.

Thanks for your patience. We'll be back up and running full-speed soonest.

Best,

Dan.

Ain't it always the way? These IT guys must KNOW when things are about to go pear-shaped, and take off on that Himalayan trek they've been saving up for all of these years!  :D

And of course, it couldn't have happened when Dan the Mountain Man was comfortably ensconced at home with high-speed broadband. He had to LEAVE and find somewhere REALLY inconvenient to go to in order to trigger the problem.

That's IT karma for you...  ;)

Thanks for your work on all this, Dan.  Me, I'll make a virtue out of the necessity of the system's downtime.  Have a few trail and lakeside photos from a test-run of new camping gear this past Wed/Thurs, and I have a 4 - 5-day ride in the Madawaska Hills planned for next week. Not "mountains" as such--or better, very old & flattened ones--but mountainous enough for my legs.  There'll be some relentless up & down for a couple of hundred kms, with Osi the Raven going fast enough (I hope) to stay ahead of the black flies... Photos of the lot (sans black flies) to come in a couple of weeks. Safe journey home, Dan. (Safari njema, as Rafiki would say.)

We all appreciate the work you do on our behalf, Dan. Thanks.

Limited comms? To me that means a sore throat so you lose your voice! Or pea in emergency whistle gets wet and goes soggy. Semaphore flags blown away?

No I guess you mean no WiFi or wiwhatever. Good luck, enjoy your ride and take care.

Lewis

UPDATE: Adrian will kindly help us when he returns to work at SJS Cycles/Thorn on the 15th, so hold tight for just a bit.

Thanks for the kind words, and all the best your way,

Dan. (...who is lucky to get a signal on the phone)

Late to the party again. When did the forum go back on line Dan? Looks like I had a bad or broken link and have been wandering around an Ethereal Plane.  No matter were back.

When did the forum go back on line Dan?
Just a few days, Andy, and at first in a limited fashion but now about 99% complete.

I truly wish I could have (could still!) inform everyone of its return, but it is a Herculean task. I'll ask Adrian to put a pointer on the landing page so folk can find the new Forum.

Nice to have you back with us, Andy!

All the best,

Dan.
