Power Modulator - a good idea?

I was interested in Daniel Beckhams comments (new Sherpa build or similar title to topic) about brake levers, and the improvement he noticed.

I notice that XT levers come supplied with a Power Modulator or something - a cylinder like gizmo that you connect into the system, lever side of the v brake pipe.

A good idea? or just another component of uncertain value in the real workld??

From what I can tell from a little searching, looks like the value is certain but negative! Just makes the brakes squishy and less effective. Apparently a safety mechanism for people who panic, or something like that!

Thanks Jim . . . . . I have always found that easing pressure on the brake levers works well enough for me!!

So, the XT levers are not set up with the assumption a modulator will be installed??  Just install as normal with the inner cable going straight into the brake pipe? and a large notice on your spectacles reminding you to avoid excessive braking?!

When I built my Raven I had the same questions about the modulator. It appears to be there for the sole benefit of the legal department.

I just binned it and installed the cables as normal, and haven't gone over the handlebars yet!

I reckon you're Powerful enough, Dan!

The basic point seems to be that basic but good quality kit, used properly, is all you need.  I will remain unmodulated.

Was planning to go on a ride today, but very icy roads made me delay - fewer and fewer roads are gritted around here these days.  I was about to set off in the afternoon, when we had urgent phone call from dtr in law - 18 month old child choking! Not much we could do 30 miles away, so advised and waited anxiously for news.  All OK. Much relief all round.  So will try and ride tomorrow, but forecast for wet and windy weather!  Sometimes things just don't work out.

Off topic even further now, so shutting down.  Thanks for comments, and for pointing me to the reviews, Jim - pretty damning they were!
