How easy is it to use the BB adjustment as a chain tensioner? Does the BB need to be greased? Do the tensioning screws make indents in the shell, making it difficult to do fine adjustments?

My understanding from some instruction sheet is that fine adjustment with the eccentric BB is impossible. You need to wait until the chain play is quite significant before rotating the shell and resetting the bolts. It's just what you say, the bolt make dents in the shell. Those dents need to be kept distinct or they'll blur into one amorphous valley which then makes adjustment impossible.

These type of bottom bracket shells have been in use for years! Try rreading more about them other than on here.

If you have concerns about the bolts indenting the BB you could always ditch the bolts completely and use one of the wedge-type eccentric BBs that are available that do not need any fittings on the shell. Co-motion make one (http://tandemgeek.wordpress.com/2010/07/18/first-impressions-co-motion-4-screw-eccentric/), another one is the Bushnell that I have on my tandem (apparently it is a bit of a heavy BB).
