Title: Thorn Nomad Mk 2 2017 - SOLD
Post by: Webswonder on February 11, 2026, 04:21:26 PM
Price £1,800. Postage if required £50 or pick up from Cardiff or Newcastle Emlyn Wales.

This Thorn Nomad Mk 2 expedition touring bike in Tonka yellow dated December 2017 was built for me a 6 foot tall male with 33 inch inside leg. Size 620M. According to Thorn, the larger 620L would suit a rider of 1778mm (5ft 10 in) to 2006 mm (6ft 7in). So I assume the 620M range would be slightly less than this, hence being ideal for me.

The bike has spent most of its 8 year life disassembled in a cardboard box in a New Zealand garage. For the three months a year I visited NZ it would be assembled, have it’s Rohloff oil changed and be used mainly for local trips around Glenorchy. I also did 3 multi-day New Zealand trails. It has done I estimate less than 3,000 miles as can be seen from the lack of wear on the original tyres.

A video can be seen here:

The bike has a cross bar height of 795mm at saddle to 900mm at stem. Mid point 850mm.

Here are some details from the specification.

    •     Ryde Andra 30 26 inch wheels. Rear rim is CSS. Front not.

    •     Shimano XT V Brakes with XT levers

    •     Schmidt Edelux 2 Red anodised headlight

    •     Pedals - Rivera Thermo Black

    •     Saddle – NOT SUPPLIED

    •     S&S Spanners - TWO

    •     No Luggage

I can provide a copy of the full parts list specification from Thorn on request.

The bike is in very good condition with the original Dureme tyres. There are minor signs of wear and tear including some small patches of clear lacquer topcoat which have peeled off exposing the yellow paint but overall it is in excellent condition.

The back 4 inches of the right hand back of the rear pannier carrier was bent down 10mm during transit back from New Zealand but I have straightened it out.

It is equipped with a hot red Rohloff hub, red Son 28 front dynamo and light. A red Sinewave USB charger is included. I never found the charger that useful as I tended to cycle too slowly! The frame can be split using S and S couplings. Once split it fits neatly into the strong cardboard storage and shipping box I built.

The bike is sold WITHOUT the Rido 2 enhanced PSG saddle shown in the photos. It had a new chain and had the annual oil change in January 2026.

The bike can be shipped to a UK address in the cardboard box for £50 or collected in person from Cardiff or Newcastle Emlyn west Wales.

I can be contacted either through this forum or jeremy[at]webswonder.co.uk

I am not looking to buy, only commenting here.

If you have the S&S coupling wrench, the S&S grease, or any luggage for it, I suggest you mention that.  If one or both rims are CSS, I also suggest you state that.

Hi, thanks. I have TWO coupling wrenches and spare spokes. No S&S grease though, I just used standard lithium grease. No luggage. I still need that! The back rim is CSS - I never even knew what that meant until I just looked it up on Grok  Many thanks!

To be honest, that price is crazy for a 26", rim-brake bike in 2026. The world has moved on and you’re asking someone to invest almost new-bike money in a format for which there are less and less replacement options. And that’s not even mentioning the bad bottom-bracket design of the Mk2 (fortunately fixed in the Mk3).

Thanks for your frankness. I really have no idea what is a fair price or the current state of bike technology. It cost me £3,800 in 2017 but that was with VAT. I also looked at the Thorn site and saw this t.ly/8r7d- (http://t.ly/8r7d-) at £2,300 + VAT. I take your points on board entirely. No point in asking crazy money even for a bike which has seen very little use. The market will decide, and the market isn't crazy, so I'll reduce it from £2,100 to £1,800. (£800 for the Rohloff hub and £1,000 for the rest of the bike?)

What nonsense. These bikes are still available from Thorn, prices from £3,500 and in this spec it'll be around £4,000.  So half price for a lightly used bike, if it meets someone's requirements, it's a bargain.
There's nothing bad about the design of EBB which has been around for over a centaury and Thorn used for twenty years.  I've never come across a single issue with one that didn't arise from mechanical miss-use or incompetence. The design Thorn use now eliminates most of that, but it doesn't function any better.
If you want a discussion, maybe the classifieds is not the appropriate place for it.

Yes. the market ultimately decides the fairness of the price; if it sells, it is fairly priced; if not, the price can be adjusted or the product withdrawn by the seller. Sometimes, the seller solicits opinions about pricing but not in this case. eBay, Gumtree, other listings here and Thorn's own used offerings provide good references for asking prices. Different buyers have differing tastes and preferences

Yes again, a discussion best made elsewhere, perhaps as a more general standalone topic, re changing market focus, buyer tastes and the effects on used asking prices.

Best, Dan

My only comment on the pricing is that S&S couplings often do not add a lot to the price of a used bike.  I suspect someone looking for the couplers won't look for used bikes because a used bike with couplers is so rare.

But if someone wants an S&S coupled bike, they probably will be happy to see that it takes 26 inch tires, as those wheels fit better in an S&S case than 650b or 700c.

That said, your size bike might be pretty hard to pack in an S&S case.  My Nomad Mk II is a size 590M and getting it into the case is a very tight fit.

If you are not in a hurry to sell it you can start high and slowly drop your price.

Thanks for all the comments. I guess that is both the problem and advantage of having a bike for sale section in an enthusiast forum. It can quickly become a discussion rather than an advert 🤣.

I am not in a hurry to sell but on the other hand I don't see the point in asking for an unrealistic price only to drop it later. I usually reckon that half the original buying price is a good guide for any secondhand item in good condition.

My fantasy plan was to add some electric assistance to my Nomad, Mercury or Raven to help me with these Welsh Hills in my old age, but I don't see any route to that happening. So now I have the attention of people who know their bike stuff, can I ask if I am right on that? Or might I be cancelled for even suggesting such a thing? 😉

No not canceled, but I would suggest starting a fresh topic in a more appropriate board on the Forum. It would help me to avoid splitting the posts when it goes far astray from the original "Bike for Sale" topic.  ;) :) A fresh topic devoted to electrification would also make it easier for future members to find that topic in a search.

Best, Dan.

Thanks for the guidance. I see there have been several discussions over the years on the topic. I'll post a question.

Used Rohloff hubs retain good value.  So, do not put a price for the entire bike below the cost of a new Rohloff hub.

If you bought that in Dec 2017, the odds are very good that the rings were installed.

Looks like you are right. (see pic) I'm certainly not letting the bike go for a song. I love it too much.

It's probably a good thing you're not in a hurry, the potential buyer is going to need to be specifically looking for such a bike.  If they are, then your original price looked good value, half the new cost with light use is a bargain. As mickeg point out, if someone is looking for a bike with S&S couplings, it adds a lot of value, but it adds nothing if they don't require them. That potential buyer might be reading this now, or it might take ages for them to come along, but the fact Thorn are still selling some of these, indicates there is still some demand.
How much is it worth to someone not looking for such a bike? Impossible to say, I wouldn't consider spending much on the wrong bike, I doubt many people would spend serious money on something they didn't want, however big a bargain it was. Knocking a couple of hundred quid off, isn't going to change that.
Good luck with the sale.

THAT's the way to advertise a bike for sale - top advert Sir.

What a wonderful bike. Top spec' and condition and very fairly priced (IMHO)

Someone is going to get so so lucky with this, Best wishes with the sale.

Not sure if you want to include full serial numbers, someone could take these and register them on Bikeregister or something..

I think it looks better if the shifter cables go underneath the bottom bracket shell, see photo of mine.  The purpose of the rubber band wrapped around the two bolts is so that if one bolt got loose, it won't unthread and fall out.

Hi, Thanks for that tip! Mine normally do (without the laggy band - now added) but I was trying not to block the view of the serial number and the S&S for the photo.

That’s a great Nomad and I bet it could tell some great tales of the South Island ( One of my favourite places to be) With spring around the corner I’m sure you’ll get plenty of interest and a buyer. Coincidentally my first Nomad ( MK1 derailleur) was ridden to NZ and never came back.

Hi, Yes, I got back from NZ with the bike a month ago. It's been a below average summer in Central Otago but that was a heap better than the winter awaiting me in west Wales. My Nomad and me did the Central Otago Rail Trail three times and the Alps to Ocean Trail, plus daily biking around Glenorchy, north of Queeenstown, but with each successive grandchild being born my cycling time got less and less, so I decided to bring it home and use a more modest machine out there. I've decided to put the proceeds of the Nomad sale to adding a Pendix eDrive to my Thorn Raven.

Sounds like you had some great rides there on your Nomad.
Re pendix fitting I think Rafiki ( of this forum ) had one fitted to his Sterling. I haven’t seen any posts from him for a long while but perhaps a pm might get a reply. I think he was retired in Spain and rode his e-Sterling to pursue  interests in photography.
