A compromise. Ugly. Well, you did ask!    :D

Whatever happened to your stainless steel drop handle bar clamps that, as I understand it, enabled the Rohloff shifter to be mounted on proper drop bars?  I can find the split drop bars on the SJS site, but not the clamps, so I assume they have been discontinued - why was that?

If the clamps were still available I would buy today.

2 reasons we stopped them:
1) the bars were horribly deep (this was a product from another manufacturer).
2) the bars ended up far too wide
sorry!!

BikeFriday offer bars a bit like these, that they call "STI Touring Bars."
See http://community.bikefriday.com/sites/default/files/images/Bars-STI.GIF
I haven't used the STI bars, but have just finished a few weeks touring with the ordinary H-bars
fitted with bar-end shifters ala http://community.bikefriday.com/sites/default/files/images/WEB-lynette-handlebars.jpg
and found them very comfortable, with multiple hand positions.
My bars have fairly ordinary grips as I ran out of time to replace with Ergons.
Other people just use bar tape, sometimes double wrapped.
Using split bars eliminates the problem of getting controls, grips etc past the bar-ends.
It probably makes the bars a bit less stiff, but on a BikeFriday with a 50cm stem that hardly matters.
