Rubber Nosecone(?) and Mudflaps for SKS 26P65 Mudguards
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:55:42 am »
When I built my Nomad, I ordered my P65 mudguards online (not from SJS), and they came with no rubber thingy on the front or Mudflaps. My wife's Raven was built by Thorn (P55s on hers), and included these parts.

I haven't been able to source them for my bike. Anyone got a suggestion?

Thanks!

I'm in the same boat, the new bike came with 50mm mudguards but no mudflaps and now I'm getting wet feet.  The SKS option at SJS is out of stock in the larger sizes.  Not sure the Brooks leather option delivers the functionality.

Perhaps I get out the fairy liquid bottle and make one as I have in the past???

The thin flappy plastic on the front mudguard ripped very soon, so I have http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bibia-touring-rubber-mudflap-black-prod1099/ on both front and back now.
I have lost one, but they don't usually fall off!

I made a mudflap out of the black plastic lid from a large coffee container.  Used two bolts with nylock nuts and some washers to attach to the fender.  Not as large as some of ones that are sold for the purpose, but works well for me.

Sorry!  Any round plastic washing up liquid bottle which opened up many creative possibilities.  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/7182362/Return-of-original-Fairy-Liquid-bottle-for-John-Noakes-generation.html

In the end I have ordered one of these (due 31 Jan) http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/sks-long-mudflap-prod25599/ Cheaper than fairy liquid and involves a lot less washing up to get an empty bottle!

Hi All!

after some 35 years of making my own full-coverage mudflaps, I have now settled on BuddyFlaps: http://www.buddyflaps.com/

The are made from 3mm vinyl and are heavy' that weight seems to be key in their effectiveness, as they tend not to blow back as much as my homemade versions made from thin vinyl notebook covers (among other things). They aren't perfect, but come much closer than the alternatives I've tried.

PlanetBike offers some shaped a bit like sugar scoops in their spares department; many of these items will fit other brands: http://ecom1.planetbike.com/smallparts.html I love their width, but they don't come down far enough to prevent the "spray zone" from including the crankset, and their shape makes them semi-rigid...not a good thing if you snag something while semi-offroad. My ideal would probably be a pear-shaped version of the BuddyFlap, but it might have some unforeseen problems in practice.

As for small parts and SKS fenders, I have been in contact with the US office, who responded quickly and very kindly advised such things aren't available in the US market...no add-on reflectors, no replacement mudflaps, no nosecones. Nice company and representatives. I do wish they supplied small consumable replacement parts like PlanetBike does. Actually, I wish more companies of all sorts would adopt PB's "repair-reuse" philosophy.

Best,

Dan.

Doh! Now I get it.  ::)

I suppose back then, with big families and no dishwashers, mum would go through a bottle of soap in a month. Nowadays, they last a year at our house! You would need to supplement your sources of fabrication materials.  (Yes jags, we do have more than two plates, and we do the dishes every day.  ::))

I note they don't come in 65mm size.

Awesome, Dan! The PB Cascadia 29er looks just the ticket!

When I opened the BuddyFlaps page, I immediately thought of "the famous mud flap girl", and lo and behold, there she was! Too bad about the white/black reversal between front/back. It detracts from the looks (for me).

Thanks!
