Your most embarrassing encounter on a Thorn
« on: November 04, 2013, 08:07:10 PM »
So there I was cruising up a long incline last week.
Weather was good for a Scottish October and the wind was on my back.
No traffic about but spotted a car parked in a lay-by 100 yards ahead.
A couple were walking towards the car with their backs to me, holding hands.
With 75 yards to go, the chap put his arm around the lady's waist.
With 50 yards until I would draw level with them, they stopped and faced each other.
With 25 yards to go ( they hadn't noticed me and I was closing fast ) they began what I believe young folk nower-days call tonsil tennis.
My mind was racing. What to do? A ping on the bell would spoil their fun. The guy looked like he could handle himself ( more of a blocker than a quarter back ) and I didn't want to be accused of spying.

As I drew level the guy looked across at me over his girlfriends shoulder.

I gave him a wink and thumbs up sign.

He grinned back. Phew!

Put a smile on my face as well.

Anyone else found themselves in a "situation" while out on their Thorn.

Matt

This Thorn was on the pavement in front of a pub. I'd never seen one in the flesh, though a Thorn had been on my shortlist for years. As you can imagine, I was very keen to inspect this apparently well-used, hard-travelled bike. I was standing right close up to the bike, bent over inspecting the panniers, wondering how many miles had turned the canvas that grey, when the owner came out of the pub after his lunch. He must have thought I was the local bike thief... It wouldn't have been so bad if I was there with my bike, another cyclist, but I was out walking with my wife. Not knowing what to do, I stuck out my hand and said, "I'm Andre Jute. I was just admiring your Thorn. Not many people here would know what it is." Fortunately, it was another forum member, who recognized me from here.

Considering how many Thorns there are, and where I live on the edge of rural Ireland, that must be a statistical anomaly, running not only into a Thorn, but into an owner who knew me.

Nah, Andre...you're either notorious, famous, or notoriously famous.

And much valued here, of course.

All the best,

Dan.

Coming off "Tom" (my Nomad) when I was trying to ride a little Trials!

The Saddle got in the way, and the brakes will not hold the wheels locked up!

Check out Bike Trials
