Pitlock stripped its thread
« on: October 04, 2013, 06:18:45 pm »
Dear technical folk.
My pitlock has stripped its thread and I can't get my front wheel off.
What does the forum suggest?
I must have done it up too tight by the roadside in France when the wheel was wobbling (after it had been taken off to put in the car to the ferry).
help help

Luckily the enormous puncture was in the back wheel, but I thought afterwards I would get new tyres for both, but then I  :-could not get the wheel off.  :-[

Hi Hedgepig!

PM'd a more comprehensive reply, but basic work in the comfort of a machine-shop setting will remove the lot without damaging the fork, dropouts, or hub. Alternate methods tend to have unintended, destructive consequences.

Best,

Dan.

If its stripped, grab the allen key ( or special tool ) while holding the opposite end with pliers, multi grip, or pipe wrench, and turn the allen key anticlockwise. If you go clockwise it won't do any damage as its already stuffed. It'll just keep spinning and not come off.

Remember  "lefty loosie righty tight"

Because its stripped should come off pretty easy.
In a past life I was a machinist/toolmaker.
If its a stripped thread anywhere else on the bike use a Helicoil. A small engine rebuilder would have these.

Local bike shop came up trumps.
And your replies meant that I did not go in there sounding too dim
Now I just need to get the thread re-drilled. :(
