Some new and innovative cycling rain gear for female cyclists
« on: September 22, 2013, 12:21:10 AM »
Hi All!

Eurobike 2013 included a showing by Dublin, Ireland clothing maker Georgia in Dublin: http://www.georgiaindublin.com/

I have no interest in the company and am posting here and on my Facebook page simply because it can be difficult to get stylish, innovative cycling clothing that works well for cycling. With the exception of a high-viz vest, Georgia's designs are aimed toward women cyclists, especially the urban/commuting market. While more traditional designs might well work better for extended touring, there is some real thought and innovation here that might fill the bill for commuters who must arrive in office-wear.

Best,

Dan.

The late great Douglas Adams and I were returning from a rather liquored lunch at the Venezia to one of our publishers where we fell in on the stairs behind a secretary wearing a body stocking under a transparent rain cape.  On the first landing the publisher, to whom we'd charged the lunch because we always did, came out of his office, gesturing at several grim-looking middle-aged men inside. "I have all our Nobel Laureates here to sign the petition," he said. "You two will do to represent the younger generation." We just about trampled him so as not to lose the secretary. "We'll save the world tomorrow," we promised.  Now, that was cycling gear. Why can't this Georgia in Dublin design gear like that? Cycling would overnight become such a trendy mode of transport, cars will die out.

Leaving aside Andre's post at circa 2.00am  ;)

I once watched a chap of a certain age cycling in the opposite direction to me. he was panting and puffing like an old steam train as he tried in vain to catch up with the two lyrca-clad ladies in front of him. I could appreciate his motivation being candid, but mused on the allegorical/metaphorical overtones of the chap's considerable but ultimately fruitless efforts.

Personally I'd have caught up with them, doffed my toupee and asked in a Terry Thomas fashion 'I say, do you go all the way?' LOL  ;D

That's me bounced from the board for a while then!

That would be "all the way to the next town", right Ian?

Best,

Dan. (...who thinks he heard correctly)

Not really my style but...it IS something different from the usual Gore tex so to be commended.

That may be handy. I have Eager Spats with zips that need to be fully undone. When you are caught in a downpour that 30 extra seconds may mean soaked socks.

A velcro is handier there.

Me? Er, the usual Gore Bike wear jacket...I like SWRV but they only do bloke stuff, so does Levis. Waiting for those places to catch up.
Pedal to the metal! Wind, rain, hills, braking power permitting ;)

Yeah, I saw the overshoes as well, and though they had some real possibilities. Remind me of the ones I owned in the 1980s made by the local Burley Bike Cooperative (who later made my tandem bicycle). I think I'd choose something other than the pink ones.  ;D

I am a little worried about the use of recycled innertubes. Most of my old ones eventually become soft and gummy and then tear easily, and I would fear the same from these. On the other hand, the ad copy says she selects them carefully, and the rubber would make for good abrasion-resistance at the sole.

Yeah, the clothing looks "different" -- even stylish -- and that's good. On the other hand, most other cycle-clothing looks much the same because form follows function and that traditional form seems to be pretty highly refined by this time. Nice to see something new on the market, though, and I commend her innovation. The "RainWrap" skirt looks an awful lot like a feminized version of the "lap apron" my father used on his motorcycles in foul weather in the 1930s and 1940s -- it kept his lap dry in the rain while trapping warm engine air on cold days.

Best,

Dan.
