Tent & Other stuff wanted
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:15:09 PM »
Well the time is nigh for my trip South...

Looks like I will go from here through France and Spain and hopefully make it to Africa where I will drink myself stupid and fly home.....

I am going as cheap as I can as I will be travelling through populated 1st world countries, so help, maintenance, B&B's and other emergency stuff won't be far away...

Currently looking for the following items, I am happy to take items that dont have to last Years but for the one trip...
If I get on well and plan a 3rd world trip say through Africa then I will have a better idea what I need and will scale up my budget.

Tent
Airbed
Any camping equipment that I think might be useful

If anyone has some stuff lying around and would like to make a few quid please let me know....

Ian

Surely exciting news, Ian!

Really nice, good, lightly used items can often be had from eBay for a fraction of their original cost.

Sale items are just coming on the horizon in many online and brick-and-mortar stores as we pass high summer.

And, too, given your itinerary for this first trip, you would likely be well served by less than top-grade kit says Dan, the man with the USD$60 tent (stacked coupons on sale price). It surprisingly came with really nice DAC alu poles, a high-waterhead bottom and flysheet, and the smoothest zippers I've found in a very lightweight yet durable package. Delighted with it.

Ian, one of my favorite places to check for nice, used gear is the BPL (BackPackingLight) Gear Deals page: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/display_forum.html?forum=20

The Euro and exchange rate would be in your favor (perhaps enough to offset postage) to consider ordering from Sierra Trading Post:

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/camping-and-hiking~d~27/

In my experience, I found something ehm, "nonstandard" in every item I've purchased from them, but they do deal in closeouts and discontinued items and are very good about returns if it comes to that. I found my beloved Ex Official Aqua shorts there, usually USD$64 apiece and well worth it...for only USD$24. They were just a quarter shade "off" in color and not problem at all. I got my Brunton 1l fuel bottle on closeout from them...MSRPUSD$20 for USD$250. The lid was wobbly so I swapped with the one from my SIGG and all was good. Some superb buys on good stuff there if you look hard.

Hope this helps. All support your way, Ian.

Best,

Dan.

Hello,
Possibly have Blacks Octane 1 person tent! £100(posted UK) should do it. New erected in garden to view.
Can 'dig' it out later if you are interested?
I might have other stuff too. Let me know what you desire..
John
PS I am a bit of a tent person if you know what I mean.......

Me too, John, but it extends to stoves as well in my case.  ;)

Those Blacks Octane 1s are very nice little tents, and the fly pitches first as I recall; this means you can set the inner up in the dry if it is raining. Quick setup, too. Nice indeed.

Best,

Dan.

Nice links Dan, thank you  :)

John, the Octane 1 is a little small for me, I prefer a 2 man. (btw, Blacks are selling that new now for £100) ;)
Other stuff I am looking for if you have spare/lying around are:

Airbed of some sort
Some way to boil water, I am not after a grande cuisine cooking experience, I will mostly eat out or at B&B when I can, just looking to make Tea and wash stuff.
Binoculars (Luxury Item)
Camera (Luxury) as I have a cheap one and my iphone...
Pillow
Decent Knife for chopping up stuff, whittling voodoo dolls and scaring small children.
Bungee cords
Some ignition device to light the boiler
Cycle satnav that will work in France/Spain
Stuff bags
Cool camp light
Recommendations for books to put on my kindle (Fiction)
Probably other stuff I dont know I need yet....

To give you some idea of my meanness so far..
I have bought the front rack for £5 from ebay, I got the front panniers from SJS (Ebay) £20
I am bidding on a sleeping bag Max £25, Powermonkey Max £25

My philosophy is that I am going on the cheap for a one way trip.... if it works out and I find that more expeditions are on the cards then I will use my new found experience to purchase more appropriate gear, maybe even sell on my bike and stuff and start again with a new rohloff bike from Thorns, BUT..... if it doesnt work out then I havent wrecked my finances finding out....

Hello
No worries. If it goes back to the original price next May I will stick it on Ebay. I suspect Blacks are having an early Summer Sale!
I have other stuff including a number of stoves, but judging by your listed messages you want cheap? So do we all-but usually cheap means cheap? I prefer good stuff and the Blacks although not expensive is a really good tent.
Best regards and Good luck finding what you are looking for.
John
