Alfine vs Rohloff internals comparo
« on: January 08, 2013, 08:31:34 am »
Hi All!

Dutch site Sint Christopherus (St. Christopher) has a nice visual comparison of disassembled Shimano Alfine and Rohloff Speedhub, with a brief summary describing how the Rohloff is much more robust...even to showing increased gear-tooth contact and engagement and explaining how the straight-cut Rohloff internal gears account for the noise in some gears.

The article is here:

There's a lot of Rohloff bike content on the pages. I made a custom search here for your convenience:

You may also notice the announcement of new Rohloff anodized colors, including a beautiful candy sapphire blue, orange, and a nice green at a recent Santos show booth. There are color-matched SON dynohubs as well. I'm not sure if the colors are exclusive to Santos, but you can see them here:

Best,

Dan.

I have the Nexus 8 Premium on one bike, basically a slightly less refined version of the Alfine, with roller brake instead of disk. This has most of the advantages of a Rohloff and I reckon it is good for local use in moderately hilly terrain, but it lacks the range for touring in really hilly areas and I don't think I would trust it for a really long tour.

A big advantage for local utility use is that the Nexus 8 Premium is much cheaper than a Rohloff, so less of a disaster if the bike gets stolen.

However I must say that the determined rider will get about with almost anything on tour. Vera has done some impressive tours on rough bush tracks and into steep hill country on the Alfine 8. BTW she is in her 60s.

Boy, Pete! Truer words were never spoken. I was zipping along one day on my rando bike and spied a rider in the distance. "No problem", I though, "I'll reel them in soon enough". Five miles later, I managed to haul up alongside a rider who was old as dirt...atop an old Raleigh Sports 3-speed. Sitting upright into a headwind. Not sweating like I was. Serene. Calm. I had ridden about 175 miles at that point, but what struck me was I had no idea how far he'd already come. There hadn't been houses for miles....

Man! Humbling. I learned long ago to never write off another rider based on appearance or equipment. As the old saying goes, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog".

All the best,

Dan. (...who frequently reminds himself that in some places right now, there's people riding single-speed, truss-fork bikes hauling enormous loads and thinking nothing of it -- and they do so everyday for Work and Life)

Yes. Some of my favourite short tours (slotted in while working or doing family visits) were on a 3-speed Brompton. Had to push up some of the steep hills though.

And my longest distance (so far) in 24 hours was on the 3-speed Brompton about 10 years ago, carrying a load for a week of survey work, and wearing hiking boots. Not planned - there was a train strike.

Also crossed Brittany (moderately hilly) on a an old 5-speed ladies bike, carrying my own luggage plus a large bag of clothing for my wife.

And done 160 km rides with a Duomatic 2-speed on an old Moulton.

But it is nice to have a proper touring bike with a good gear range like that of the Rohloff.

And, as I still use the Brompton for some long-distance rides, I have tweaked its gearing to get a 23" low and 7 different gears, making it more suitable for hilly areas.

Impressive if I can still do that in my 60s I'll be well chuffed :)
Pedal to the metal! Wind, rain, hills, braking power permitting ;)
