I'm okay on this one, guys! Hand-done coachlining is just it, as far as I'm concerned; the bee's knees and ne ultra plus of paint jobs. My 1980 Centurion ProTour15 is an example, done by hand with bamboo shafted horsehair brushes that hold the paint and dispense it evenly as it is applied. Burnt orange and cream over pearlized maroon with micronized gold metalflake under clear coat over double-chrome (over copper). See attached pic.

Whew. One of those is enough. And yes, I am a *big* fan of Andre's gold coach-lining.

And...now you've seen a road-dirty DanBike, fresh from the Outdoors before the compressed air post-ride cleanup.  :-\

You guys are the best, you know that...  ;) :D

Dan. (...who loves 'em all; lugs, fillets, and TiG welds, with paint glossy, fancy, and stealthy)

Thanks, Andre; that means a great deal. As it happens, I have used it...a bit over 35,000mi56,000km worth of use on the frame itself. I see I need to cut and level the clear coat again. I do so with an extremely fine rubbing compound about every decade or so, then finish it nicely with a polymer surface treatment. It is just under 33 years old, and a testament to the long life of steel (much of the use was on logging roads, fire trails and really bad gravel, sometimes heavily laden; the rest on pavement. Mudguards help a great deal in keeping a frame nice and add greatly to component life in my experience).

The quality Japanese factory chroming job added 15oz/425g to the frame weight; worth every bit of it in my opinion.

All the best,

Dan. (...who understands bicycles aren't just transportation, but also Art)

Hi i'm sorry about the Hope rings, I'm looking at a nice Ti Chainring 36T or a 38T.
Maybe a Surly SS 38T  ::)
A 37T would be good! not a 36 or 38!

Hi Pete!

Depending on which bolt-circle-diameter your crank has, Surly offers the following stainless chainrings:
Sizes: 94mm BCD x 30t, 31t, 32t, 33t, 34t, 35t and 36t
104mm BCD x 32t, 33t, 34t, 35t and 36t (nothing above 36T at this time)
110mm BCD x 34t, 35t, 36t, 38t, 39t, 40t, 42t, 44t, 46t, 47t, 48t, 49t and 50t
130mm BCD x 38t, 39t, 40t, 42t, 44t, 46t, 47t, 48t, 49t and 50t

Surly say...
Quote
Our 94bcd,104bcd and 110bcd x 34/35/36t chainrings are made with a 2.2-2.3mm thick stock plate and work best with 5-8 speed chains. Many folks are using these on 9 speed drivetrains but this can often results in a "tight fit" right out of the box (This will loosen up and shifting should improve after the chain breaks in). The 110bcd 38-50t and all 130bcd chainrings are machine finished to have a 2.1mm tooth thickness and thus work fine with 9spd chains.

Sadly, no 37T, Pete.

Best,

Dan.  (who was once missing a few teeth himself, but now has them back...)

Hi Well?
I like odd number's, think that 36T will have too lower top gear.

I once see a photo of a gear being made out of Hard Wood in Africa for a truck gearbox, it worked for about 100km's.

I'm about to go for my 1st loaded (short) tour in year's so I'll See!
