Vitamins
« on: December 22, 2012, 02:43:03 PM »
Just thought I would put one up in the mumpets folder as it is a quiet day?

Just wondered who on here takes vitamins and whether you think they do anything?

I take:

Glucosamine
Omega oil

I have a bad elbow from a historic acident and feel these certainly help.

Multivitamin
Mini aspirin
Garlic tablet

Not sure if these do anything but guess they cant hurt! Especially the last one with living so close to Transalvania - lol

I know that some liken Cider Vinegar to the Elixir of Life. Can't stand the taste myself. I do however place great store in honey. Wards off my lurg most years and is a tad less 'hair shirt' than Cider Vinegar! Dollop on my porridge in the morning and I'm up and running.

Yes am also a great fan of honey. Not sure if it is a wife's tale or not but I find that local honey does make an improvement to hay fever.

Thats my excuse and ill keep eating it till proven wrong (and then probably just carry on)

I have never been convinced that any form of vitamin supplement is necessary in a normal diet. Im sure if you search the web you will find studies that suggest it's just marketing hype.

However I am convinced that if you believe something is doing you good then it may well be, whats the downside of taking a spoonful of honey or some vitamin pills?.... None.

The nearest I came to changing my view was a few Years ago when I went to see a doctor about some cramp in my legs I was getting far too regulary, he recommended I eat bananas.....
He was a locum working in Saudi so I thought he was a nut...
Anyway I did start eating bananas regulary and my cramp did reduce.
My partner at the time who was a Nurse said that I was taking on extra potassium which is supposed to help with cramps. I was now a believer in pills etc.

A few Years later I was told that in fact it was more likely I was more conscious of drinking plenty of water during exercise to reduce dehydration (it was kinda hot in Saudi) and not the Bananas, nonetheless I believed at the time it was the Bananas.

The mind is a Strong force, if taking some Honey works for you then I say what the hell..... Go for it :)
In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

I don't take vitamins at the moment but plan to take a supply when I enter Asia.
Never drink and drive. You may hit a bump  and spill your drink

Vitamin D3
Omega 3

Both recommended by Chiropractor.

Skin is definitely less dry and to be honest I "feel" better for both.
 Also big fan of honey.

Echinacea when I have a cold coming really seems to help.

I don't take it myself, but my wife swears by her 'magic potion' - 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 cup of honey and one bulb of garlic - whizzed together in food processor for 1 minute and then put into a jar to 'ferment' for 5 days.  She then takes two teaspoons each  morning in her orange juice (yuk!).  Reckons she hasn't had a cold or even the sniffs for the whole 5 years she's been taking it.  Unfortunately, it didn't stop the cat from biting her on the wrist 3 weeks ago causing infection and inflammation!

Any time I've got a sore throat - big dose of vitamin C for the next day or two. Don't know whether it works but I've not had a sore throat develop into a cold for the past 5-6 years (except that one time I was in Tasmania on a tour and didn't have any Vit C), and I've watched the rest of the family get nasty colds in that time.

...and whilst I'm still up in the pulpit with this one: Have you noticed how 'Big Pharma' try to convince us that we are in a perpetual state of illness and need medication everyday. If this were the case then surely we would have become extinct! Whilst not denigrating some of the wonderful advances in pharmacology I feel a need for perspective on this one. Eat and live well as far as you are able; should stack the cards a little in your favour.  Says he as the season of feasting, festivities and lashing of fine wine, ale and porter is about us!!!!  Suddenly it feels rather lonely in this pulpit  :)

Actually I think it is the quacks and snake oil salesmen who are more guilty of that. If you have a healthy diet, are not exposed to extreme cold or stress  vitamin supplements are just a waste of money.
