hebie chainglider off road ??
« on: November 01, 2012, 05:20:10 PM »
Hi all I've just spotted a hebie chainglider for rohloff 38-16 which I'm running but its on a 29er mountain bike now I like the idea of one of these but will the chain slap about too much for use off road. If it makes any difference I've got a salsa el Mariachi with the adjustable dropouts and so no chain tensioner . I've a feeling I won't be able to use but thought I'd ask as someone may have tried. ;)

I use a Chainglider on a 29er.

A Chainglider is intended to be used with hub gearboxes or single speeds. It won't work with derailleurs either front or rear, or with a chain tensioner. You need and eccentric bottom bracket or sliding frame ends. furthermore, the length of the chain must be constant, so rear suspension is out unless the bottombracket and the EBB/sliders are on the same swinging arm pivoted forward of the BB.

If your bike meets those requirements, and the cog count is right, you can use a Chainglider.

The Hebie Chainglider seems to me more than sturdy enough to survive off-road use. In fact, it would describe it as apparently indestructible. It is the only chaincase I would recommend for offroad use.

Thanks for info, I have a fixed chainline I have sliding dropouts and a rohloff so should be all good , I was mainly concerned with the chain bouncing up and down damaging it while riding off road as it moves about half inch up and down from its natural position.

Nope. I've just had my Chainglider open to investigate cog-hopping (caused by a grotesquely slack chain) and there was zero damage to the Chainglider. Also, I'm conducting a factory lube only experiment, no extra chain lube whatsoever, and watching the Chainglider closely, and there has been no damage. I now don't think a chain can mark a Chainglider under any ordinary circumstances, which would include a slack chain. -- Andre Jute

Nice one sounds good, how much slack do you run on your chain out of interest on all  my previous single speeds I've had aboutan inch of movement maybe a touch more from pushing chain up and then down in centre of cogs thanks again

Chainglider works OK for mild off-road - I have had no problems on my local tracks and paths, but this is not "proper" mountain-biking, worst I have done was a rocky footpath with a few tree-roots.

Chainglider is very useful in the sand-dunes.

I run about half an inch of slack top and bottom, an inch total, same as you. -- AJ

When I asked SJS about a Herbie Chain Glider for my RST, they sent a couple of pictures of why it was not a good idea to fit one.  It apparently damages the Rohloff shell.  So I didn't bother, just kept cleaning my chain as normal.

Hi Matt!

This seems to have been a problem about 5 years ago, but not now that Hebie have redesigned their Chainglider to specifically address the problem. I recall reading at one time on the Rohloff site that Hebie would stand the costs of a replacement shell/repair if their revised Chainglider caused damage...am hunting for that link now.

Here are some relevant threads that should address your questions:

And...Andre's first use-report, with other musings linked from there: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=2467.0

As a side note, Andre's thoughts are based on his own considerable experience and testing. He has written very well on his positive selection of the Hebie Chainglider following a less stellar experience with other types, described here: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=2233.0

There is even more on the topic if you search the Forum archives, but the above links should answer most questions.

The only remaining problem following Hebie's redesign seems to relate to the Chainglider rubbing on the sides of thick alu chainrings (like Thorn supply); This last summer, Robin advised me the Chainglider should be used with a thinner Surly stainless chainring, like this: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/surly-110-pcd-5-arm-stainless-steel-chainring-38t-silver-prod20828/ He told me Thorn liked the concept of it but not the minus points: noise and extra difficulty to remove the rear wheel. A quick check of the Surly site ( http://surlybikes.com/parts/stainless_steel_chainrings ) shows they do not currently offer a 38T 'ring in the 104mm BCD I would need for my Deore HollowTech II crank. A full range is available in a 110BCD.

These are all things to weigh, and I'm getting much closer to buying a Chainglider myself, but getting the required thin chainring for my crankset presents an additional challenge.

Hope this helps,

Dan.
