Hi All
has anyone here tried a Surly Moonlander or a Pugsley?

Not yet, Ian; the fellow you need to talk to is Vikram Banerjee ("Vik", late of this forum). He has an older blog-site here:
http://thelazyrandonneur.blogspot.com/
...and a much newer (current) blog here:
http://www.thelazyrandonneur.com/
Vik is a nice fellow to deal with, and I'm sure his sites will be a help to you; he's done a *lot* with big-tired bikes, Ian, and actually prefers for them for much of his use in Western Canada and even in Mexico's Baja peninsula and elsewhere in North America's desert southwest. He's an accomplished kite-boarder, too. Interesting fellow!
All the best,
Dan.

Thanks for that Dan,
I was aware of Vik's blog but hadn't trawled it in detail. He gives an informed and useful perspective on fat bikes. I don't think they're for me just yet...
Cheers
