Edinburgh Pedal on Parliament
« on: May 01, 2012, 11:10:44 am »
A successful protest cycle in Edinburgh on Saturday! About 2500 people turned up to protest for improved cycle infrastructure and cycle safety. It was good to see so many turning out to support the cause. All types of bikes - styles, makes and models and participants of every age. One of the photos shows a Thorn triple but I did not see any other Thorns. Even the police are on bikes now in Edinburgh! I think a related event got over 10,000 cyclists in the centre of London too! Here are some Edinburgh pics ...

Hey that's great!

Been in Edinburgh and saw a reasonable amount of cyclists, especially considering the steep hills. It looked more OK than where I live (Belfast, UK) but it seems there are areas of concern.

I guess main problem is lack of cycle lanes? Most people were on the roads.

Yep, cycle lanes too narrow where they exist. Good news is that the protest has made the Edinburgh council commit more funding to cycle way development and safety! Thins are moving in the right direction. the plan is to make Edinburgh like Amsterdam or Stockholm re. cycle friendliness.

As for the hills well when I get to become an 'old' cyclist (I don't think cyclists really get old though) I will buy a motor for my Raven Tour!

There's a bit of a cycling movement starting here too....

Still plenty of kerb crawling or annoyed drivers due to no room for a bike and car but painted on cycle lanes do seem to create some awareness of two wheelers. AKA Rolling Speedbumps ;)

Few accidents here, as everybody goes on the kerb, just lots of potholes and annoyed drivers. But all in all, there's reasonable peace between drivers and cyclists, but it's seen as dangerous...which is unfortunate as cycling isn't, by numbers of fatalities per miles cycled, dangerous.

And a Thorn tandem at one of the public cycling outings too :D
