GPS tracking of stolen bikes: _Outside_ magazine article

(1/1)

Danneaux:
Hi All,

Interesting story in US publication Outside magazine.  Printed in the February 2012 edition, online here:
http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/biking/Who-Pinched-My-Ride.html?page=all

Theft deterrence seems to be just that -- deterrence.  I do believe anything can be stolen, given enough time and preparation, so it pays to make it as inconvenient as possible for opportunistic thieves.  The best strategy is to never leave the bike alone or if you must do so, lock it using a variety of methods and don't leave it long in the same place.

A bit of wisdom from the icebike listserv:

--- Quote ---All Bikes Weigh 50 Pounds

30 pound bikes require a 20 pound lock.
40 pound bikes require a 10 pound lock.
50 pound bikes don't need a lock!
Author Unknown...
--- End quote ---
As others have noted...the 20 pound bike needs no lock, 'cos you daren't leave it.

Best,

Dan.

I'm confused? Has this thread been edited, it's just appeared on my RSS feed but dated 20th Jan 2012..??

Anyhoo. I think this is the same product
www.integratedtrackers.com/GPSTrack/Products.jsp

I contacted them over two weeks ago, I have still not received a reply. Doesn't fill me with a great deal of faith if you are relying on a back end to track the GPS signal. I'll call them again (they never answered the phone the first time) and see what's what.

No, same title. I sometimes find my RSS feedreaders don't post on time and sometimes not at all. It may be it picked up this post title from my very similarly-titled new post, "GPS tracking of stolen bikes: now possible!" ( http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=4328.msg20182;topicseen#msg20182 ). It is odd there would be such a delay.

One and the same.

Nor me! A person would hope inquiries would be answered promptly; they won't sell many this way. They have recently issued a flurry of press releases. Perhaps they are just starting up, but it seems an ambitious goal to launch a new product and a new service simultaneously. Lots to potentially go wrong, though I suppose once up and running, it would be essentially automated. Still, queries should be returned. These things are pretty expensive and a lot is riding (sorry) on them.

Please let us know if they ever answer (or don't; perhaps even more important).

Best,

Dan.
