Is this the place to say Hi!
« on: August 07, 2010, 11:33:14 AM »
Hi folks,

I am pondering whether or not I should get back on a bike.

My bike is a 1964 model (Major Nichols racing frame) It still has the original Huret gears, in working order. Since new, I have had only new wheels and crankset. Of course it has an original Brooks saddle. Nowhere near as expensive back in the 60's. (In fact they were regarded as pretty ordinary TBH.)

The bike hasn't been used for about 15 years, and now I am getting portly, I thought of resurrecting my steed!

So, as it isn't a Thorn nor probably capable of accepting one of these 14 speed hubs, I hope I'll still be made welcome.
I will update on progress with bringing the bike back to life. (If I don't buy a Thorn; which I might consider if I could find a site that would tell me how much money to save up! )

Anyhow, Hi again folks and
Stay safe out there.

regards
JA
 ;)
I used to be indecisive; now I'm not so sure.

Welcome JA

I'm sure it doesn't matter whether you own a Thorn or not, we are all cyclists.

Good luck resurrecting your bike, I am 100% sure you will not regret it.  Keep us informed of progress, and of course photos of bikes are always appreciated.   ;D

JA,
Welcome to the forum.

That Major Nichols frame bike sounds an interesting one. Photos of a refit would be welcome.

I find comfort more important when riding now, more so than when I was young and racing bikes appealed to me. In that way Thorn bikes are very good as they are designed comfortable to ride rather than racy.

If you are looking at a new Thorn bike then you need to save up £1k or more depending just what you are looking for, have a look on the Thorn site. They can be bought secondhand for a lower price.
Julian.

Hi JA, just joined the forum myself. Hope you get back your Major Nichols back on the road, I have started riding with the local CTC group the last few sundays and it has been great, building up a Thorn Audax Mk3 this week that will cope with the rides better than my current road bike.

The brochures include frame prices or various build options, I downloaded mine from here:
