Highlands - 2 or 3 dayer

(1/1)

Paulson:
Hi all, myself and a fellow Thorn owning buddy are thinking of doing a long weekend (3 days) tour in the highlands, will probably have to arrive by train and we're considering using Inverness as our start/end point (unless anybody has any other suggestions, we're from down south, but then isn't everybody 'down south' from Inverness??

Can anybody recommend a route, given the fact that we're looking to do credit card touring as opposed to carrying vast luggage.  Ideally suggested day routes, rough distances, heads up on any special conditions, etc.  Good b&b's, pubs (!) etc and enjoyable routes?

Many thanks!

Maybe consider starting/finishing at Oban or Fort William and heading out towards Arisaig then head south through Moidart, Ardnamurchan, onto Mull for a circuit of the island, then ferry from Fishnish to Lochaline and cycle back up to FT William through Morvern then down to the coast road up through Corran to Camusnagaul. Check the passenger ferry from Camusnagaul to Ft William is still operating though. Also the Kilchoan to Tobermory ferry doesn't run in winter, so depends when you're going. You can do the same route from Oban by getting the ferry to Craignure, and you don't need the Camusnagaul ferry.

Not exactly the Highlands, but a great short break and Arran has plenty Highland ambience, withnthe added bonus of Cal Mac ferries: Train to Ardrossan, boat to Arran - good days cycle - boat from Lochranza to Kintyre - good days cycling or 1.5hrs to get the boat to Islay - superb very friendly and traffic free - boat back the way yopu came or time it to get the boat to Oban and have a day round there or cycle south to Balloch and the train again.  The trouble with 3 days in the Highlands is getting out of and back to Inverness really only gives you 1 day. Also think about the train to Aviemore and you could cycle to the east coast to geat a train home.
Keep us posted on your decision :)
I am doing the arran, kintyre, islay trip in April.

If you want to make the most of your time you can get the overnight sleeper to Fort William or Inverness and return the same way.
