Rohloff cable guide?
« on: December 07, 2014, 01:43:24 am »
Am about to replace the cable guide on one of the Thorns.

Do they need to be a specific one or will any good quality guide do?
What about the cable?

The shifter cable might depend on the exact shifter. I used standard shifter cables when I replaced my cables and didn't have trouble. Someplace I read that the newer shifter need slightly smaller heads on the cables. But it seems a bit of filing will take them down enough to fit properly, so not a big problem.

If you've got the EX box, I "think" you need the slightly thinner inner wire so it goes round the tight radius of the internal pulley better. I "think" its the 1.1mm thickness wire rather than standard 1.2mm that you need. The nipple at the shifter end is a standard size.

I'm thinking he means the cable housing.

Am talking about the cable housing from the shifter to the hub.

No problem:

Outer casing is any good quality 5mm brake outer, its important to use genuine Rohlof black ends as they have a seal in them.

The inner wire needs to be a 1.1mm (to fit through the seals in the caps without tearing them) with the smaller Campag style head (to prevent damage to the resin cable drum in the shifter).

In practice as you need inner, outer and caps its probably easiest just to get a genuine Rohloff set http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rohloff-shifter-cable-set-18m-2-x-11-mm-inners-and-housing-8268-prod16488/

Hope this helps, Dave.
