it was an American or Australian bike maker and I think the spokes on the rear wheel were even lengths making it stronger
A British manufacturer, Orbit used to build the rear triangle of the frame with an off-set to counteract the dish.  That seemed to work well, though of course you could only use a rear wheel built for that frame.
We ought to appreciate how good modern components are.  Snapped spokes, broken axles, cracked rims, ripped flanges, split tyres... all that stuff used to be way more commonplace than it is today.  20 - 30 years ago everyone on a long ride carried spare spokes and the tools to change them, now most of the people I ride with probably don't know how, they have never needed too.

Co-Motion, an american bike manufacturer is a small business, makes custom frames and complete bikes.  They also make tandem bikes.  They have one model, the Americano is a solo touring bike that uses tandem wheels.  I do not know what they use on that model now in the era of through axle hubs, but in the quick release skewer days they used a rear hub spacing of 145mm for rear derailleur wheels without dish.
