First Mercury tour

<< < (3/3)

Hi Steve
I started at Newport railway station. It was the easiest station to get to with the bike. Arriva trains Wales have a direct train from Manchester to Carmarthen. Route was Monmouth, Broad Oak B&B, Bridge Sollers to cross the Wye, Bucknell B&B, Bishops Castle, Montgomery, Maesbrook B&B, Ellesmere, Chester. Train from Chester was the original idea but my wife drove over and we spent the night in Chester.
Fairly hilly on days 1 and 2 but getting easier as the ride progressed. About 10 mile of A road in total.
PM me if you want a detailed route.
Doug

Swislon:
Many thanks Doug.
I wondered if you used the train somewhere at start or finish.
I am planning our first tour for a very long time and thinking if we should set off from home and do an enormous loop back home over several days.
We live in Dorchester now (originally Harrogate) my wife fancies the Isle of Wight.
I think the train will figure somewhere in the route but those days when nearly all trains had an enormous guards van with room for dozens of bikes is over. Which is a great shame.
I once did a tour of Wales from Chepstow and came back along the border so would like to do the border again one day. We have a Mercury and an RST.
Thanks again for sharing.
Steve

Don’t forget to put some photos. Intercity trains are a pain but local services usually take bikes.
