Maybe mine is not a true dynamo based on definition, but the manufacturer of mine (SP) calls it a dynamo.

While the name may not be technically correct, "dynamo" sounds much more impressive than "alternator".

These hubs are called 'Dynamo hubs'.!
John (who likes correct pronunciation)

I learn something new every day, there was me thinking they were called "Hub dynamos".  ;)
