That Canon D10 looks a pretty handy little camera.

Little?
Maybe I need a compact? The D10 needs a lens fitted to the body? Or am I looking at the wrong picture?

Got my eye on an Nikon Coolpix P310. Anyone any views?

I dunno, but I feel that these cameras are the equivalent of the Walmart bicycle bought for a world tour or $12 dollar tyres - and as such are comically out of step with any serious intent.  Only advice I'd give a friend in all three circumstances is to budget more, and buy a product that is likely to not cripple the pursuits intended. Cheaply made ballet slippers for hiking? Good only to realize that hiking isn't the cup of tea imagined! Tragic really.  Ones trip deserves better.  ;)
the iPhone is a far better choice, and most of us take a phone  anyways.
