Hi All,

For those interested, in June 2011, Mittelmeyer announced the current availability of a twist-grip Rohloff shifter compatible with drop 'bars, a la Gilles Berthoud, priced at ~Euro97.  They claim it allows cable replacement and lubrication without dismantling.  For 2012, they have announced the forthcoming availability of:

1) Rohloff-compatible brifters (brake-shift lever combo with side-throw shifting, 1 gear up/down per throw) and Magura hydraulic compatibility  (March 2012 expected release date).

2) Rohloff-compatible thumbshifters for mountain bike or road 'bars (March 2012 expected release date).

Mittelmeyer's homepage is here, in German:  http://www.mittelmeyer.de/
Here, Google-translated to English: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mittelmeyer.de%2F&act=url

If these products come to market, they would offer some real alternatives to Rohloff riders making the transition from derailleur machines.  Dunno how you'd know what "gear" you're in without some sort of indicator.  I'm not sure they offer anything beyond the usual twist grip except familiarity and a cleaner installation, but it is still nice to see some alternatives coming to market.  Hopefully, Mittelmeyer will be able to meet the 2012 release date.  Usual disclaimers; no interest in the company, just interested.

Best,

Dan.

Update: I just placed another email inquiry to Mittelmeyer yesterday; when/if I hear back, I will update.

Based on their list of distributors, I would expect these alternative shifters to be available first to limited- or small-production manufacturers. For those in the UK, that would be Mercian.

For the aftermarket, I'd keep an eye on Marten Gerritsen in the NL. He's usually on top of such things and is a Rohloff specialist (Schmidt, too). I've just posted an inquiry to him. One of the nicest people in the industry, his site is here:
http://www.m-gineering.nl/
English version here: http://www.m-gineering.nl/indexg.htm
Another possibility is Gilles Berthoud: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?act=url&hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=de&tl=en&u=http://www.gillesberthoud.fr/&usg=ALkJrhhNODdQmZERLUeTQJOPKkpuvVcGpg
And we cannot forget Thorn/SJS Cycles, who similarly lead the pack when it comes to such things: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/

Best,

Dan.

I see where you are coming from ... but really, the thins about making the transition from deraileurs in this fashion, I must say, is akin to making the transition from barefoot to shoes by buying a pair of shoes and then a can opener to remove the sole from the left shoe.

It is a system and only as a system is it "Rohloff".  There are deraileurs.  There is the Rohloff.  Some like Fine single malt scotch.  Others like to unwind with a martini.  To take an olive from same said Martini however, and improve that 25 year old Scotch with it - leads to a missed point and a fine hangover!  ;D ;D

Drink Rohloff straight I say!  8)

You may be right on the money with those sentiments, Pavel. I heard back from Marten today, who is holding off on ordering a product more complicated than Mittlemeyer's current version of the Rohloff grip-shift, which has had some still-unresolved problems.

I can see the concern.

The present Rohloff system (except for some occasional niggles) surely seems to work well, as a system, just as you say!

Still, interest in alternatives is evergreen (people keep asking me for updates), so I'll keep an eye open for any new twists. The current shifters are a barrier to entry for some. Alternatives might add more Rohloff users to the fold.

Best,

Dan.

Update: Just heard back from Mittelmeyer. Translated, their response reads,

"We are still in the Testfase. March, we no longer provide".

So, they're still testing, but have missed the March release date.

It seems wise to wait till the bugs are worked out before releasing the various shifter alternatives on their drawing board.

Best,

Dan.

Current Rohloff shifters are a bit like the old downtube friction derailleur shifters - a bit agricultural and basic, but they work, all the time, because there is really not much to go wrong with them.

Note: I still use friction DT shifters on my old road bike (with the 5-speed cassette) and they work fine.

Me too, Pete, and I actually prefer them! They still hold a place of honor on my rando bike and I won't be swapping them out anytime soon.

I have come to think it is the virtues of the traditional Rohloff twist-shifter that make it so devilishly hard to develop an alternative.

Basically, the Rohloff design is a simple pulley. Get away from that, and things get all sorts of complicated. If one goes with a cable spring-tensioned at one end, then there has to be a counter-spring for the opposite direction of travel. Then, you've introduced spring, ratchets, and pawls into the mix. Then, there's the dual-cable part of the design, which is handled most elegantly in the original twist-shift. I've been playing in the workshop and figured with a bit of creative work, one could make a coaxial housing that contained both cables...but why? Except for the second, parallel run of housing, the present system works reliably with conventional materials.

It'll be interesting to see what Mittelmeyer and others come up with -- and how well it works once developed and released.

Though the original works beautifully, there's a lot of pent-up demand for alternatives, judging by the volume of mail I receive, asking "are they here yet?". Alex Wetmore has been busily adapting Shimano Alfine/Nexus 8 hubs to trigger shifters (See: http://alexwetmore.org/?p=559 ), but those hubs index at the lever rather than the hub, like Rohloff.

Best,

Dan.

Hi All!

Not gonna happen this year. On 1 September 2012, Mittelmeyer posted the fllowing notice on their home page (Google Translated from German):
Quote
Race handlebar brake levers for Rohloff hub

because other major projects we need to move the brake lever and trigger until next year.

So, that's it for now. Perhaps next year.

All the best,

Dan.

Update: Mittelmeyer are no more. They are now Envoma ( http://www.envoma.de/ ).

No sign of "special projects" like the Rohloff shifters anywhere on the new page.

I have an email in to them, but it doesn't look promising for production of their Rohloff-compatible shifters.

More updates as I get them.

Best,

Dan.
