Raven Tour on Ebay Auction in Virginia USA
« on: January 03, 2023, 12:00:06 PM »
Not mine, I saw the listing.

Only shipped to USA locations.  Size not listed but a lot of dimensions are listed.  Son hub but nothing connected to it.

I do not see any engraving or sticker on the Rohloff.

If I was interested, I would first ask if it had a decal that was removed.  If so the serial number would be gone.

Interesting wheels for an RT. The SON appears to be a disc model and the Rohloff has a disc end cap...but internal cabling. The frame and fork, as expected, does not have disc caliper mounts.

Best (and Happy New Year to All), Dan.

Looks engraved to me.  If it's the hub that came with the bike it's too recent for a sticker (It's a Raven rather than a Raven Tour)

I also noticed the SON was a disk model, they're a very distinctive shape, maybe they were just future proofing.  Changing gear mechs is a lot simpler, and cheaper, than changing hub plate. Does look nicely proportioned, I was thinking it looked a lot sportier than mine did, then of course... no guards, lights, rack, bottle cages...

50 watchers with 5 days to go, anyone like to guess what it'll fetch?

Two bidders fought each other in the last few minutes for it.

That's a decent price, a couple of hundred $'s more than I'd have guessed, though I don't know the US market.  Thorn's have a fair novelty value in the UK, they must be a rarity in the US.

I have never seen another Thorn in USA.  I saw one at a campground in Iceland when I was there, that is the only other Thorn that I have seen, besides the two that I own.  I have not been to the UK.

There are two other Thorns with Rohloffs in my community according to a trip log on Crazy Guy on a Bike but I have not seen them.

Rohloff hubs are almost unheard of in USA and they are quite expensive here.  In 2014 I think I saved about $500 when I bought mine from an internet seller in Germany instead of buying it from a USA seller.  A neighbor is a bike mechanic and works for one of the larger bike shops in my community, he told me that my Rohloff is the only one that he has ever seen.

So, it is a bit of a surprise to see two bidders bidding up the price on a Thorn with a Rohloff.

I considered bidding on a Raven Catalyst a few years ago, no wheels or hubs included, frame and fork plus crankset and a few other parts sold for about $300 with shipping.  I would have been able to use my Nomad wheels on it, but I decided that if I had it I would probably never use it so I let it pass.  If I had it I would have had to buy a second shifter and EX box to make it easier to swap wheels from frame to frame.

There is no national VAT tax in USA, so prices here are not comparable to UK prices.
