Weird tick while riding at low gear
« on: March 29, 2022, 03:01:55 PM »
Hey !
I'm about to get a Rohloff e14 on a Riese und Muller bike.  (multicharger)
Thing is, I tested it, and gears 1 to 10 have a weird ticking noise.
I'm not speaking about the "purring", especially on gear 7, its most likely an irregular noice like "tik, tik, tiktiki, tik tik" when pushing the pedals at low gear.
I made that test with bike OFF (no motor, no electricity) but it keeps ticking.

Unfortunately I have no video with the sound right now, since I have not purchased the bike yet.

Any clue ?
The local dealer has no idea what's going on.

Thanks for your help !

The first thing that comes to mind is that the Rohloff is between gears when the twist-shifter is at those positions (i.e. the switch inside the gear mechanism is only partly turned). If that is the case, then the length and tension of the shifter cables needs to be adjusted so that the hub fully enters the respective gear.

Thanks for your fast answer !
It's an electric shifter model, linked to the bosh system. I think there is no shifter cable that needs to be adjusted :/

Am I wrong ?

Although there may be no shifter cables to adjust, the gear mechanism inside the hub is still being shifted by the electronic system and this may be slightly ‘ out’’.
I googled ‘ Rohloff e14 known problems ‘ and there’s this video

https://youtu.be/Ovfc37d1jSU

And the first topic is the need sometimes if gears aren’t engaging accurately,  to recalibrate the electronic shifting system. Might this be the answer I wonder? Has the dealer tried recalibrating the e14  do you know?

Yeah ! We did watch this video together, and made the recalibration. We still have that noise.

Btw I think I found someone on the internet having a noise, which seems a bit close to mine (but I heard it in trafic, it didn't sound exactly as this one)

What do you guys think ?

There's more discussion in this forum about Rohloff hub noises. Here's one thread http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7713.0. As 11th gear is direct drive I'm wondering if clicking in gears 1 to 10 is due to noisy freewheels.

I would also note that one of my Rohloff hubs instantly became quieter when I moved it from an aluminium frame to a steel frame. The former frame has larger diameter tubes which, I think, make good echo chambers for amplifying any noise. I think that R&M bike has an aluminium frame.

Almost all Rohloff hubs get quieter with use. If there are no obvious problems with the hub operation then the best approach is to use it and, if it's still excessively noisy after several months then the dealer should arrange for it to be returned to Rohloff.
