Wheel rim scoops
« on: January 18, 2019, 08:48:30 PM »
Has anyone come across a wheel rim that has indents/recesses between it's spokes? I saw one today, on what I think was a mtb. It was a fleeting view as the traffic lights changed to green and the ute the bike was in sped off. The wheel appeared to have a large, circa 10cm diameter hub fitted; possibly an ebike?

Not sure about indents, but some of the fat tire bikes have rims with large diameter holes which I assume are intended to lighten the rim, and then some form of rim tape to fill in the holes.  I have never looked close at them so I can't describe any better.

I looked into really fat rims before I settled on the Big Apple balloons. Most of the available rims appeared to be in at best theoretical production, except those made for the unicycle crowd. They have a specialist subgroup, the mountain unicyclists, abbreviated muni. These guys use seriously wide rims, starting at 30mm over the tyre retainer beads, and some use 30in and even 36in diameter rims. All the wide rims that were actually available to buy had lightening holes, and the tube was protected by a tough layer of lightweight plastic on the inside of the rim between the holes and the tube. At a quick glance that could look like a pressed indent in the rim between the spokes.
