If your referring to Brompton's we can't nor can an other Brompton dealers, its part of the deal when you sign up, they want all bikes demonstrated and ready to ride when handed to a customer.

I have wanted a Brompton for some time and this policy has stopped me buying one, not that Brompton will be that bothered, nor miss the money.  The irony is that you can buy any other bike, folding, fixed or seperable without having to visit a dealer.  You can also buy a secondhand Brompton without having to jump through any hoops.  What is it that makes Brompton so special?  Folding and unfolding the bike is hardly rocket science.  I wonder if it is a ruse to flog you Brompton lifestyle accessories

Brompton are just 'different' on a number of levels....They are a quirky company making quirky bikes.

I bought a brand new one from 'Evans' a couple of years ago and, as Dave says, I had to pick it up from the store. There was no hard sell on accessories whatsoever. They simply showed me how it all worked and told me to bring it back in six weeks for a free check over. I took in in for the check over, and again, no hard sell whatsoever on accessories......Note, this is a 90 miles round trip.

To be honest I quite like Brompton's way of doing things......

Matt, they sell mystique, in the guise of very capable bicycles.  (I want one, as you may guess -- I don't need one, but that's how mystique works.)  That's why they can make up rules that make no sense, but which everyone follows -- this is not at the level of rationality.  But not all variants of mystique are the same, nor do they work in the same way. On this side of the pond, f'rexample, Harley-Davidson also sells mystique, at rather more per slice, and of course you can't fold one up & hop a tram with it. The H-D mystique never did much for me, tho'  :-)
