Chain ring bolt removal

In my attempt to go from a 48 to a 46T chain ring I am encountering problems with a recalcitrant ring nut despite having bought a 'park tool' ring nut tool to hold the nut! Are there any tips regarding removal? I think you can see from the picture I've made a pretty good job of widening the nut slots with a punch and hammer! Do you think I should drill it out? Thanks in anticipation!

If you can get someone to hold the tool on the nut whilst you undo the hex key bolt. It helps to stand the crank set up on a block of wood, we use an old bottom bracket axle in a vice.

Thanks Dave but it turned into a drill out job as me and my able assistant proceeded to completely mangle the totally inadequate slots on the chain ring nut!
