Mid-tube standover height
« on: June 17, 2016, 09:37:44 PM »
Does anyone know from which points do Thorn measure mid-tube standover height. I seem to recall it was Xcm from the headtube but was it from the centre of the headtube or its circumference edge?
Thanks

Ian,

I don't think it matters so long as you are consistent at each end -- either center-to-center or edge-to-edge -- between the head tube and the seat tube.

I think it is measured midway on the actual (sloped) top tube rather than along the virtual top tube. If you want, I can measure mine to confirm.

The midway measurement of standover would be just about where most people would stand taking into account buttocks pressed against saddle nose.

Best,

Dan.

Thanks Dan
As long as I know it is actually at the mid tube point that'll be fine. On my Mk1 the mid tube standover is 799mm and it is a 560L. Just doing a compare and contrast.

Ian,

Tire size can be a factor also, so one needs to know whether the measurement was done with Thorn's default tire for the bike in case you might decide to equip yours differently -- can be important if clearance is tight.

When I was doing my research prior to buying my Sherpa Mk2, Rachel at SJS Cycles said the default tire for its measurements was 1.5in vs 2.0in for others like the Nomad.

Might be worth dropping a note to SJS to confirm, as Dave Whittle might not see your query here.

All the best,

Dan.

Ian...

I just measured my 590M Nomad Mk2. The published 800mm standover comes at exactly the midpoint when measuring along the sloped top tube (not the virtual TT). This is with properly inflated 26x2.0in Schwalbe Duremes.

For general reference, the standover measurements of all current Thorn bikes is published in thier Mega brochure on page 22:
http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/THORN_MEGA_BROCHURE.pdf
Included are mid-tube standover and standover at the front of the top tube.

Best,

Dan.
