How to tighten the bottom bracket
« on: July 02, 2014, 09:14:22 PM »
I just got all the tools needed (according to Thorn mechanics) to tighten my bottom bracket, including a 1/2" drive, any recommendations or any good video or post about to how to proceed?

Thorn mechanic told me to tighten before one of the sides, I think he said left, but I cannot remember 100%. Do you know?

Thanks!

Park Tools has videos for common jobs around the bike. If you're an aspiring amateur mechanic, you should also have Park's Blue Book. See these links:

You need to tighten the right hand side (drive side) fully before screwing the left hand cup against it and tightening.

Its important that the right hand cup tightens against the frame/eccentric not the left hand cup.

I am on the process of doing it...

I understand then that I should untighten the left first, tighten the right and after that tighten the left.

When I try to untighten the bottom bracket the eccentric moves. What should I do?

I finally managed, it wasn't that hard once you find the right directions and hold the bike steady.

Now I have to go out and test if the creeking is gone...

How did it work?  I'm having creaks from down there on my nomad mk2. And were the "correct" directions just those in this thread, the youtube, or something else?

Thanks,
pete

"Creaks from down there" can also be a loose square taper crankarm.  Was a crank arm recently installed?

As said in this post you need to unscrew first the left side and after that the right side. And when you screw it back you put first the right until the end and after that the left side.
